Dear Gabriel,

You were my first real surprise in life. You were the first to change my perspective from dreams to reality. I would never know what it would mean to me that day your mom just out and asked me if I wanted to have kids. I'm glad I said yes.

Things between your mama and I certainly didn't go the way I had planned but lived and thrived regardless of our squabbles. You're not quite ten years old yet but you're already an amazing young man.

You are one of the most honest people I have ever met. You have more integrity than anyone else your age for certain. You are accepting of everyone who comes to you with good intentions and you're not rude to those who you know don't. Heck, no one said you had to accept a new sibling from a different mother but you're as excited as I am about AJ. That kind heart of your's has won over many people and you are just being yourself.

You're smart Gabe, and I mean that in the best way. Your interest in learning new things is apparent every day. You have an open mind that allows you to grasp concepts beyond your age and, in all honesty, beyond most people older than you.

I could never have even hoped for better for you. The world is before you and I know you'll do whatever you set your mind to do. You have already exceeded any expectations I had when it came to you. I could not be prouder to have you as my son.

You set an example that all your siblings should strive to follow. While I wasn't always around, you became a fine young man anyway. I will always do my best to support you. I'm sure we won't always see eye to eye but that will never mean that I don't love you or that I don't support you.

In closing, you were the basis that I could do something right. Bringing you, a brand new life and a new light into the world is one thing that even I could get right. Granted, your mother definitely helped with that one. She's amazing in her own right and tough as nails, if a little goofy at times. Then again, is that really a bad thing?

My advice to you is this: Don't change for anyone, period. As long as you be yourself, then everything will come to you as it needs to. I know I have said you're already an fine young man several times here, but enjoy being a kid just a little while longer. Trust me, time only goes by faster from here on out. People will come and go but what matters most to you will always be with you. And Gabe? Never stop asking questions.

Sincerely,

Your overly proud Father.
